Nothing helps you get into the Christmas spirit more than creating it yourself.

One way I am cutting costs and preparing for the joys of Christmas is by making a lot of the decorations myself. There's something magical about turning something ordinary into something special, and there's no better way to display your creations than on your Christmas tree.

After my divorce, I had to start from scratch with holiday decorations. This meant everything from the tree to the ornaments on it. As most of you know, decorating for the holidays isn't cheap. So I decided to make this Christmas season extra special by doing a lot of crafts with my son.

Starting from a blank slate really allowed my family to turn our living space into anything we wanted it to be this year. So as usual, I gravitated towards a more minimal rustic look. This year, our theme centered around white and lighter colors.

Today, I wanted to share some of the inspiration I used to get into the holiday spirit. When creating your own DIY holiday decoration projects, it helps to make a list of the things you already have around your home. This keeps the cost low and allows you to choose crafts that center around preowned supplies.

Here is a list of the stuff I already had on hand:

  • Ribbon
  • Twine
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Mason Jars & Lids
  • Markers & Crayons
  • Little Jingle Bells
  • Glue
  • Glitter

I searched Pinterest using keywords from my list above. I found a ton of inspiration, but I wanted to share my favorites down below. I hope you can also find inspiration to get creative and create some wonderful memories with family.
