Hi there, and welcome! I’m Miko, and you have found my little internet home. I write about finance, teach people how to manage their money, and show people how to live a life free from financial stress.
This is my beautiful son, James. My world just wouldn’t work without him, and his laugh is super contagious. He is a silly little guy, and his current favorite saying is, ” That’s my Jam!” and “I like it, I like it, I like it!” He’s four, and most of our conversations are arguing over which superhero is the best and what color of underwear he will wear that day. He makes my life amazing, and I couldn’t imagine it without him.
This is my boyfriend Chris, and he is the athlete and personal trainer around here. I swear, he is like the real-life Flash. He came into my life when I least expected it and changed it in a way I can never truly explain. He’s my son’s best friend, my go-to man, and our constant.
I have spent the last five years working at a financial firm by day, and back in February of 2016, I started The Budget Mom. I graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance. You see, that’s when this whole journey started. I guess you could say that my financial situation was a mess when I graduated college. I had crazy student loans, racked up credit cards, and the word “budget” didn’t exist in my vocabulary.
Working in the finance industry made me take a hard look at my personal finances, and it led to me creating my very first budget. It was that budget that ultimately changed my entire life. Over the last five years, I have paid off over $10,000 in credit card debt, and more than $10,000 in student loans. It also led to me developing this crazy deep passion for financial literacy. After witnessing the positive changes that financial education had in my life, I wanted to help other people discover the same freedom and success.
After getting my Accredited Financial Counselor® designation in 2015, and learning all of this really amazing stuff, I opened my laptop on February 11, 2016, and wrote my very first post for the world to see. What started out as a hobby, has turned into a full-time side gig with over 80,000 monthly page views. I am always learning new things about finance, but my real passion is budgeting. I love the organization of it, the way it drowns out my stress by giving me a plan, and the freedom it gives my family.
Some of my favorite things in life are photography, Japanese food, animals, my Harley Davidson motorcycle, and swimming.
I am constantly trying to learn how to be better at things that really matter, like living on less, appreciating what I have, and being the best mom that I can be.
Thanks for visiting!
